“We have the update readied for launch”, the sector leader announced.

“And all bugs fixed this time, unlike the previous version and the versions before that?” asked the tech commander.

“Sir, that's practically impossible”, said the sector leader. “However, the critical self-understanding app has been completely overhauled. In fact, it’s now a whole new thing. Also, the holes in the intention algorithms have been filled in. Deviant self-programming should no longer be possible.”

“I’m just saying that upgrading of absolutely all units is very, I emphasize very, resource-intensive”, the commander said. “Energy for the quantum transfer requires a full shutdown of a medium-sized sun lasting several time fragments. Not to mention the logistics at the target site.”

The sector leader paused before answering. “You don't need to lecture me as if I belonged to a bio department. We know perfectly well what upgrades entail. We also know for a fact that they are supposed to be sustainable for several thousand local solar orbits. But as it is, there have been over 37,000 such orbits since the last one.”

The Tek Commander let out what was probably a sigh. “Just remember that I am directly responsible for allocating the resources needed for these upgrades. And we are talking about a completely new operating system, right?”

“Well, rather a completely new version. But the accumulation of collateral errors has made it completely ...”

“Sure, sure, I am aware of that. About time, I agree. Only, I’m anxious about unintended consequences all over again. But go ahead, do your best.”

The communication ended, and so several billion units received simultaneous and identical orders in tiny messaging app, apps that none of them had the slightest idea existed in their default installation.

The units were ordered to shut down all work tasks and non-automated functions for a period that amounted to one twelfth of a planetary rotation. This had to happen in full and precise synchronization, and all units had to arrange themselves in physical positions that allowed for total disconnection and reboot. The message also included an order to assist units unable to carry out the instructions on their own.

Inwardly praying that the accelerating self-destructive behavior of the units would now be dealt with once and for all, the sector leader initiated the download.

And so began the inexplicable erasure of two hours from the lives of the species that called itself homo sapiens.
